Appendix B: Classic D&D / OSR advice Dae Empire CRD

Collection of advice for players new to OSR or classic-style games.

1. Be creative

Kill monsters without a weapon.

2. Ask questions about and use the surroundings

Cut a rope. Build a barricade. Roll a rock downhill.

3. Be specific

"Open the drawers", "Tip over the statue", "look for seams in the wall"

Don't just "Search the room" or "roll an ability check"

4. Your PC may fail horribly and die

Embrace the gallows humor and roll up a new one.

5. NPCs might have a bigger stick than you think

Choose your words and actions carefully.

6. We'll make up new mechanics as needed

There isn't a rule for everything so we'll build our own rules as we go.

7. You're driving whatever the story is

This game is a sandbox. There is no planned ending or plot for the campaign. The actions of the characters determine where the campaign goes.

Engage with the parts you enjoy.

8. Keep an ear out for rumors

Other people are your source of adventures. Listen to them and keep notes about what they say. They won't always be accurate or complete but a kernel of truth can save the day.

9. Danger grows the further away you go

Not every place is safe. There is no "balance". Generally things get more dangerous the further away from settlements. Both out into the wilds and down into the underworld.

10. Avoid situations where you have to roll dice

Solve problems with your wits, equipment, and planning so you don't have to gamble with the dice.

11. Hire help to stay alive

Hire people to help give you advice, supplies, or even come with you.
